City Streets Quilt (also known as Seattle Streets Quilt, but, hey, we live in WNC)

City Streets uses 20 blocks of a version of 9 patch blocks where the 9 patches are all different sizes and appear in a rather random pattern.  It looks best when done with a large variety of fabrics.

The 20 blocks are approximately 12 inches square, arranged in a 4x5 pattern.  Blocks are separated by  1 inch sashing strips.  Since some of these should run the length of the quilt (5 ft), you should have about 2 yards sashing of whatever color you like.  I have usually used black, but any solid color will work.

The patterned fabric will be 4x5 feet.  This translates to about 12 fat quarters, but to avoid having two adjacent blocks of the same fabric it is recommended to have at least 18 fat quarters.

You will have to trim the 9 patch blocks to be squares of exactly the same size.  This is best done with a 12x12 plastic ruler with a diagonal line.  I will have two of these for the class, but you may want to do the trimming at home.

The class will be 4 sessions and will include sandwiching and quilting suggestions, possible with time to complete these in the last class.  Binding will also be taught for any who are unfamiliar with the standard technique that I use.

A rough course syllabus:

Class 1 - choosing fabrics, planning, cutting sashing and pattern strips, sewing strip sets

Class 2 -cutting trip sets and sewing blocks,

Class 3 - trimming blocks and assembling quilt top

Class 4 - sandwich, quilt and bind

Most classes will require that you finish some work at home before the next class.
